Hill, A. (2001). Soldier boy: The true story of jim martin the youngest anzac. Ringwood, VIC: Penguin Books.
This text will be used in every lesson as an introductory aspect. The students will be given mat time for the educator to read the story of Jim Marting to them. Discussion of the Chapter will occur after each reading which will assist in students building their knowledge and understanding of life at that time. This will also help students with writing their own final short story.

Students will respond to the focus text by making connections between their own experiences, as well as coming to understand differences and what life was like in Australian around 1914, through answering questions and whole class discussions. Students will discuss how the focus text is started and written and the effect that this may have on the reader. Student are asked to consider how they will structure and organise the text that they will be writing for their summative assessment. Significant Demonstration of Learning:
By the end of this unit student will understand how text structures can achieve particular effects and how language features and patterns can be used for emphasis. This will be done through students creating their own detailed texts in the form of a short story. Through editorial choices during the planing, drafting and publishing process student will also demonstrate their understanding of grammar, accurate spelling and punctuation.
